society

I finished listening to this audio book yesterday.

I really liked it. I don't know why, but I couldn't stop listening to it. I've been frustrated with my lack of reading recently so I decided to pick up some more audio books so I can listen while I am doing other tasks and both this one and the first Penderwicks book were great choices.

This book, just like other dystopian books (Hunger Games, etc) make me think so much of society. It is interesting to imagine the type of society these characters live in, and it always makes me think of our society.
Our society tells us so many things which we accept and live. But I wonder if we ever really make the decision or if we are just told that it is the thing to do.
Such as drinking.  Honestly, I've never understood how something that is fermented, tastes nasty and makes you lose control of yourself could be a thing to look forward to. Yet our society tells us we should.
Society tells us which women are pretty and that you have to be a certain size, height, hair color.
Society tells us that we have to make a certain amount of money to be happy.

today I'm not going to listen to society.  Today I'm going to be me and do what I need to do.
(And I'm going to find my next book to listen to.)

I really liked Matched, too. Recently Indiana changed curriculum so children do not have to learn cursive. It made me think of Matched and how subtly we could all forget how to write and form the letters.

Let me know if you find another good book. I've been having a drought!
